This spectacular natural arena supports the densest population of lion and spotted hyena and game viewing is almost guaranteed to provide the "Big Five. Experience your first breathtaking view of 260km of this extraordinary natural sanctuary from Heroes Point before descending 600m into the heart of the crater for a thrilling game drive.
This afternoon, you will be driven via the Olduvai Gorge, which cuts through a chronological sequence of rock beds preserving continuous archaeological and fossil records of life on the plains for over the past two million years. We stop at the Olduvai museum to learn more on this geological phenomenon. Continue to the Serengeti under canvas mobile camp with game viewing en route. Serengeti Under Canvas is a mobile, tented camp that follows the annual Great Migration across the Serengeti National Park. This is luxury camping! Here you’ll be treated to fine dining, excellent service and luxurious accommodation on the edge of the Serengeti’s greatest spectacle.
The Great Annual Migration involves millions of herbivores and a hungry selection of predators. It is natures travelling circus on a gigantic scale. The herbivores following the rains, seeking the green nutritious grass, attract a gathering of predators, some lie in wait in the rivers, others on the plains. It is literally nature’s greatest show, full of drama, determination, tragedy and triumph. Serengeti Under Canvas tracks this spectacle, moving between semi-permanent camps, staying in each location for several months at a time until the Great Migration moves on.
Explore the endless plains of the Serengeti on early morning and late afternoon / evening game drives in an open 4x4 safari vehicle. Morning game drives begin as the sun is rising and the nocturnal predators are ending their nightly hunts. There is always the chance of seeing a pride of lion lingering over last night's kill or a leopard relaxing on a branch where it has wedged its prey. Serengeti Under Canvas is carefully positioned in an attempt to always be within easy driving distance of the massed herds of the Great Migration and game drives focus on finding the wildebeest and the various carnivores that accompany them. Should guests prefer, the two daily game drives can be replaced with one, much longer, daily outing, with a picnic lunch provided.
Ballooning safaris may be available, depending on whether the camps are currently within reach of the launch site and at an extra cost.
