A land of plenty first settled by Viking Norsemen, Normandy has an eventful history and embraces rich, pastoral farmland, a striking coastline and great monuments.  Explore Normandy and the Loire Valley on this exciting private journey.  Start off from Paris and stop to see Monet’s home and stunning gardens.  Visit the medieval city of Rouen and its famous cathedral before reaching Normandy.  Here you will explore the D-Day landing beaches.  Visit Pointe du Hoc, where American troops scaled the cliffs to capture German defenses.  Travel to Arromanches, where parts of the floating harbor are still visible.  Take in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mont St Michel, perched on a rock off the Normandy Coast and explore the beautiful Loire Valley -- all by private car!


Day 1: ARRIVE PARIS
Upon arrival at Paris airport you will be welcomed to France by our local iExplore Representative as you exit customs into the

 

arrivals hall, and transferred to your hotel where you will be assisted with check-in procedures.  You will be confirmed for 4 nights at the Relais Christine in a deluxe junior suite, inclusive of breakfast.

In the evening enjoy a River Seine Dinner Cruise and explore the sights of Paris in a completely new light whilst travelling on the River Seine.  The boat cruise offers a three course dinner and live musical entertainment and lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Day 2: PARIS
Today you will enjoy a half day sightseeing tour in Paris with your private vehicle  and English-speaking guide.  This morning an overview tour will include famous Parisian sights such as the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysées, the Latin Quarter and the Ile de la Cité, where you will visit the beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral and the Sainte Chapelle, a pearl of Gothic architecture.

This afternoon is unscheduled for your own exploration.

Day 3: PARIS
After breakfast you will enjoy a half day (4 hours) sightseeing tour with your private vehicle and English-speaking guide in Paris.  Visit the Marais, one of Paris’s most historic districts.  This area houses many former residences of aristocratic families, which have now been restored and are now museums.  You will see the Place des Vosges, lined with pink brick and covered arcades.

You will have the opportunity to visit the Musée Carnavalet, nestled in the Marais. The museum displays exceptional collections: rich archaeological artifacts of the Gallo-Roman and Medieval periods, memorabilia from the French Revolution, paintings, sculpture, furniture and "objets d'art" that recreate the atmosphere of private residences from the 15th to the 19th centuries.

Afternoon is at leisure. You may like to discover Germain-des-Pres, one of the more upscale neighborhoods in Paris.

Day 4:  PARIS
This morning why not visit one of the many flea markets of Paris!  This afternoon, your guide will introduce you to the world-famous museum, the Louvre.  Originally the Royal residence of the Kings of France, the sprawling Louvre palace contains one of the most important art collections in the Western world, spanning from remotest antiquity to the mid 19th cent, with the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo as perhaps its two most famous exhibits, and the upturned glass pyramid by I.M.Pei at the entrance adding a contemporary touch.

Day 5: PARIS – GIVERNY – ROUEN - NORMANDY
You will be met this morning by your private vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide for your transfer to Port en Bessin.  En-route you will visit Giverny to see the house and gardens that inspired Monet. The house is decorated in the original color schemes Monet admired and in the gardens you will see the famous Japanese bridge and water lily pond.   You will also stop in Rouen, a city rich in Medieval buildings, to visit the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral and see the giant Renaissance clock, Gros Horloge.

Day 6: NORMANDY
Private vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide for a full day (8 hrs) touring in Normandy.  Today's touring will include the Pointe du Hoc which the US Rangers scaled demonstrating a triumph of planning, training and execution by elite and well-led troops.   Visit Omaha Beach, where you will examine several sites along the beach from both the German and US perspective. Hear about Operation Aquatint, a 1942 Commando raid on what was to become known as Omaha Beach at the time of D-Day. Your highlight will be to visit the US Military Cemetery and Interpretation Centre at Colleville sur Mer overlooking Omaha Beach. Continue to the Artificial Harbour at Arromanches; this prefabricated harbour, bigger even than Dover harbour, was built in secret, towed across the English Channel and constructed in eleven days and the remains are still very much in evidence.

A military history expert will visit your hotel this evening and give a talk about the history of D-Day.  .

Day 7: NORMANDY
This morning you will be met by your private vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide for a full day (8 hrs) touring in Normandy.  Visit Caen, the capital of Lower Normandy, with its two abbeys and the must-see Mémorial.  This Museum charts the history of World War II.  In the afternoon continue on to the medieval town of Bayeux.  Here you will visit the Bayeux Tapestry, a 225-ft embroidery which depicts the story of William of Normandy's conquest of England in 1066.

Day 8: NORMANDY – LOIRE
Meet your English speaking driver guide for a full day transfer by private vehicle to the Loire Valley.  En route, you will visit the Unesco World Heritage site of Mont St Michel, which perches on a 264-foot rock just off the Normandy coast and is only accessible by a causeway.  You will visit the famous Abbey via narrow cobblestone streets, which took over 500 years to build, from 1017 to 1521 and according to local legend, was inspired by a visit from the Archangel Michael to the Bishop of Avranches.

Day 9: LOIRE
Meet your English-speaking driver-guide for  a full-day (8hrs) sightseeing tour in the Loire Valley by private vehicle. Visit the Chateau de Chenonceau that straddles the river and is one of the best-known Chateaux of the Loire region. Continuing on to Amboise you will visit the Clos Lucé, a handsome Renaissance manor where  Leonardo da Vinci spent the last four years of his life.  The museum contains working models of some of da Vinci's inventions.

In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to explore the Anjou region of the Loire Valley. Enjoy a guided tour through the “caves” and experience life underground, as Loire Valley farmers have chosen to do since the Middle Ages.  The two farms include a wine cellar, barns, cowshed and even a village hall and were inhabited until the 20th Century.

Day 10: LOIRE
Full day (8hrs) Loire Valley sightseeing with your English-speaking private driver-guide You will travel to Azay-le-Rideau to visit the 16th-century Chateau and its enchanting private park.   Visit the famous gardens at Villandry, a before continuing to Tours.  You will also follow part of the Wine Route and visit the Clos de L’Echo vineyards.  Learn about the ancient art of wine making and at the end, enjoy a tasting at the Couly-Dutheil’s Clos de L’Echo and Chinon wines - beautiful wines made from Cabernet Franc grapes.

Day 11:  LOIRE - VERSAILLES
Morning transfer to Paris by your private vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide. You will drive to Chartres to admire the magnificent Gothic cathedral with its world-famous stained glass windows.  Continue to Rambouillet to the Chateau. This hunting ground next to Paris, attracted many kings, from François I who died there to Charles X who abdicated there. Half day sightseeing tour to Versailles, huge palace of Sun King Louis XIV, with your private vehicle and English-speaking guide.  visiting the State Apartments and decorative gardens.
